Scuba Diving on Koh Kood
Koh Kood (also known as Ko Kut) has only recently been discovered for its exciting aquatic life. Our local dive sites are therefore pristine and not overcrowded by large diving operations. Scuba diving opens our eyes to a whole new world of adventure and possibilities – a magical realm of colour, beauty and endless fun! There is nothing quite like the sensation of breathing underwater and floating weightless amongst the colourful fish and the amazing marine life of the Gulf of Thailand. This will be an experience you will never forget!
The Island of Koh Kood (Ko Kut)
Koh Kood is Thailand’s best kept secret. A tranquil, tropical emerald island, she boasts some of the most beautiful stretches of white sandy beaches and secluded bays in the country. You will be welcomed by friendly smiling people upon your arrival, wake to crystal clear azure waters, spend your days swimming in tropical sun kissed bays, and enjoy the shade of coconut trees. The island has only recently become accessible to tourists and is therefore charmingly unspoiled. Every day is seen out with the warmth of the setting sun and a refreshing drink in your hand. It’s easy to fall in love with this place! So where better to learn how to Scuba Dive than in Koh Kood? Our water is never cooler than 26 degrees and averages throughout the year at around 30 degrees. The shallow bays, lack of current and calm waters make Koh Kood an excellent and safe paradise to start your diving adventure.

Seahorses thrive in the waters of Koh Kood 30/11/10
The last few days have seen a sudden appearance of tiny seahorses in the shallow waters around Koh Kood. It’s a magical experience to suddenly discover beautiful little creatures like this suddenly right on our doorstep (so to speak!). Seahorses are not uncommon in Koh Kood, but we have not seen them so close to our house reef for some time and we are happy to be able to share them with customers Discover Scuba Diving and our Fun Divers have loved seeing them too. Some of the babies we have seen have been no bigger than a centimeter in height and could easily be mistaken for a tiny piece of seaweed! We are happy to have seahorses, the inspiration for our logo so close to home.
Nemo lives in Bang Bao Bay! 25/11/10
It seems as though Nemo and his family have moved to our very own house reef Bang Bao Bay! We have recently discovered a healthy family of saddleback clown fish living just 10 meters away from our shop… very exciting! Mum and Dad are very protective of their young and of course their eggs which they guard pretty well and see off any potential threats with a determind knock to the mask! Bang Bao Reef is a perfect place for novice divers and we often take our Customers Discover Scuba Diving here in the shallow and calm Bay. It ha wonderfully clear water most mornings and there is so much to see! The reef is full of fuseliers and rabbit fish with a number of pufferfish, sting rays, scorpionfish and cuttlefish. It’s so wonderful to have such healthy marine life right on our doorstep so that we can show people just how magical diving is around the island of Koh Kood.
Glorious Diving at Hin Loy 21/11/10
Koh Kood Divers got to see Hin Loy in all it’s glory today with 25 metre vizability and big schools of thousands of fish! WOW! We had a full boat of fun divers to enjoy the spectacle too and everyone was amazed to see the whole divesite at a glance. The conditions are improving daily and we can now enjoy the magic that diving in Koh Kood has to offer. Beautiful harlequin sweetlips, big schools of fuseliers, baby titan triggerfish, big grouper, juvenile yellow box fish and lots lots more. We have also found a new big boat to rent so that we can take more divers. It’s a beautiful boat with a lovely captain and his wife so we are happy to have found them. We now plan to make day trips with 2-3 dives a day and snorkeling with a beach picnic included. Our customers can enjoy a lunch of Thai food and fruit in the shade of coconut trees and take a dip in the turquoise sea during their surface interval, before exploring the next dive site of the day. It’s a lovely day trip and we are excited to be able to offer it now on the comfort of our new boat!

Exploring New Divesites 14/11/10
Koh Kood Divers were out in the water again today trying to find some new places to dive. With the help of some local fishermen who told us of a secret spot just off shore, we have found a new amazing dive site with so much to see and plenty of healthy corals and big fish! After dropping down to 18.9m and sand sand sand… we kept swimming to find more and more rocks and corals with heaps of marine life. Jess found a rock with 3 small lionfish living around it which was really cool. They have been seen in Koh Kood occasionally but are pretty rare. We also found huge blue spotted ray, a white-eyed moray eel and many huge travelly hunting the waters! But by far the highlight of our dive was being lucky enough to see a pair of cuttlefish mating! It was an incredible experience. We were able to watch for 5 or 6 minutes and the cuttlefish were quite happy with us being there and taking pictures.
We are still working on a name for the divesite, but we’ll let you know when we think of one! (Maybe Hin Jessie!) Koh Kood is certainly full of surprises and we are sure there must be more amazing diving to find. We can’t wait to find it!… Watch this space…
Scuba Fun for all the family 11/11/10
The Holmqvist family from Sweden joined us today for some fun with fish and an Introduction to Scuba Diving. After trying diving at The Beach Natural the other day, Adam would not leave his parents alone and wanted to dive some more! So the whole crew came over to Koh Kood Divers for a DSD and a lot of giggles! Mum and 14 year old Ida were bit nervous to start with, but soon found what all the fuss was about and loved every minute! And so did we! What a lovely family and a great way to spend an afternoon on the island. We think 10 year old Adam is a natural born diver and hope he will do his Junior Open Water next time they visit Koh Kood! Discover Scuba Diving is a PADI program designed as an Introduction to diving. There is no study involved, just some simple explanations about how diving works, and how to get the most fun out of it possible in a safe environment. Our PADI Instructors will take you to a sheltered and shallow bay (usually our very own Bang Bao Bay!) to show you a few skills and then take you for a gentle dive along our beautiful reef to check out some fish and have some fun!

Natural Fun! 09/11/10
It was an afternoon of bubbles and lots of fun at The Beach Natural Resort, Bang Bao Bay today. The Koh Kood Divers team offered Free Try-Dives for anyone who wanted to have a go… and a lot of people did! Mums, Dads, Boys and Girls lined up to see what all the fuss was about. It was fun for all the family but the kids really showed us how to dive with a big SMILE! We hope to offer Free Try-Dives every week at THE BEACH NATURAL so that everyone has an opportunity to breath underwater in a safe and fun environment, and maybe even fall in love with it like we did! To see more photos from the day, check out our facebook page Koh Kood Divers.

Georgina from Australia joined us for some awesome dives today with amazing vizability at Hin Loy and Hin Yedhi. Wow! The corals are looking amazing and both divesites were full of fish today with huge schools of barracuda and fuseliers at Hin Yedhi and heaps of blue spotted rays, small sting rays and porcupine fish. It was a full day today at Koh Kood Divers with DSD’s and Fun Divers enjoying beautiful weather and great diving. We were worried when a storm hit last night but the weather turned out perfect for the rest of the day. Bob was busy in the water with Bo and Daniel trying a Discover Scuba dive in Bang Bao Bay. Everyone had great fun and saw a lot of cool fish! Meanwhile the boat took a trip to Koh Raet with our fun divers and Alice leading some nice dives, with the second at Ao Tum. Plenty of blue spotted rays around at the moment and we had great vizability at Ao Tum. Diving our house reef Bang Bao Bay 22/10/10
Our house reef at Bang Bao Bay was looking healthy and beautiful today with 2 lovely juvenile harlequin sweetlips which have made this their home. We also have a large number of baby Blue Spotted Rays which live here – making it quite the nursery for young marine life. The dive also gave us a big school of fuseliers, great barracuda and a masked porcupine fish. We are very lucky to have such a thriving reef right on our doorstep.

Fun Diving Koh Raet and Ao Tum 21/10/10
Father Luc and daughter Layla De Waegh had a great day fun diving today with Bob and Bui. 2 great dives at beautiful Koh Raet and Ao Tum saw some cool nudibranch and massive grouper along with big schools of snapper and fuseliers. The vizability is getting better too after some recent big storms. NOW the rainy season is over! Blue skies for 3 days so hopefully we are now seeing the start of high season.
Koh Kood Divers New Sign! 20/10/10
The Koh Kood Divers Team have been busy making the shop look great for the coming season. There are a lot of bad backs and sweaty brows around here that’s for sure, but it’s all worth the effort. The Bang Bao shop is looking fantastic and today we put up our beautiful new sign (hand painted by Alice!). Thank you boys!
Diving Hin Loy 08/10/10
Our new Dive Master Trainee Miro from the Netherlands went for his first dive on Koh Kood today with our Dive Master Alice. Beautiful diving at Hin Loy – full of fish! Among the highlights were some spectacular fan corals, cuttlefish, razor shrimp, humphead parrotfish, plenty of harlequin sweetlips and schools of fuseliers. The corals are certainly looking healthier after the cooler monsoon season. Miro is back out in the water tomorrow with Instructor Bob to practice his skills circuit. Meanwhile, back at the shop… Jess and Bui have finally got the compressor working after a few set-backs with our island electric supply making life difficult! So we are on a petrol engine now and the first tanks were filled today HOORAY!
First Dives of the Season! 06/10/10
With the rainy season drawing to a end on the Island of Koh Kood Thailand, and our boat back in the water after a little holiday, we had a great start to high season with some beautiful dives today at Hin Loy and our very own house reef Bang Bao. Mark (a fellow DM trained in Koh Tao), Chris and Nong were visiting from Hong Kong and enjoyed great vizability and heaps of beautiful fish with Jessie leading some lovely dives.
Our beautiful and unspoiled island is alive and refreshed after a long and very wet monsoon! The rivers are full and our waterfalls are brimming with clear fresh water. This cooler weather has also given some of our corals a chance to recover after a very hot season at the beginning of the year. After 3 months off over the monsoon, Koh Kood Divers is now open for business and ready for adventure! All PADI scuba diving courses are available at our dive school in Bang Bao Bay, including Intro dives, PADI Open Water Course all the way through to PADI Dive Master and Assistant Instructor. Learning to dive here on Koh Kood is an experience you will never forget! Our waters are calm, clear and full of exciting marine life just waiting for you to discover. Come and have some fun and enjoy a whole new world of colour and adventure!
The Big Move – Koh Tao to Koh Kood 18/09-23/09 2010
Jessie and Alice finally moved FOR GOOD to beautiful Koh Kood! The journey was pretty epic with several chapters to the ordeal… Firstly a night boat from Koh Tao to Chumpon, pick-up from Bob and Bui to Pattaya where we picked up our new compressor. Then the drive to TRAT, overnight in Trat, Ferry to Koh Kood, Taxi to Bang Bao Bay where we discovered our bridge had been swept away in the monsoon! (and now it’s dark) So, compressor, 13 tanks, 70 kg weights, 6 boxes of dive gear, 2 computers, 10 bags, a grass cutter and a bed had to cross the river by kayak (well, the compressor went on a little fishing boat… thanks guys!) in the full moon light! We arrived to find no electricity and no running water (just a bucket full of tadpoles!) Check out more photos of our journey on Facebook (Koh Kood Divers) But a week later we are fully wired (electric is in), water flowing, all gear sorted and ready for business! The view alone was worth the effort. This truly is a PARADISE. And the jungle creatures are a small price to pay for that! Our house reef Bang Bao is looking healthy and full of life. Harlequin Sweetlips, Sting Rays, Great Barracuda, Schools of Parrotfish and Rabbit Fish just in front of our shop. The sun is shining and it looks as if the rainy season is drying up. Time to go diving…

History & Geography of Koh Kood (Ko Kut)
Koh Kood (Ko Kut) is the last Island in the Eastern Thai waters and very close to the Cambodian border. It sits next to Koh Chang and Koh Mak and is actually the fourth largest Island in Thailand. The original settlers on the island were both Thai and Cambodians who apparently fled to Koh Kood in search of refuge after the French claimed the city of Padjantakiri in 1904. The island offered opportunity for rubber and coconut cultivation, not to mention the rich seas in the area for fishing. Koh Kood was largely inaccessible for many years due to political problems with Cambodia. However, these issue now resolved, the Island has recently opened its doors and is slowly becoming more popular to tourists seeking an ‘Untouched Paradise’.
The Island of Koh Kood – Thailand’s best kept secret
With fewer visitors than its sister islands of Koh Chang and Koh Maak, a visit to Koh Kood is like stepping back in time. There are no banks or ATM’s, so visitors are advised to bring cash. No 7Eleven shops or busy bar filled streets. By visiting Koh Kood you will experience a more authentic and peaceful Thailand. With an Island population of just under 2,000, the biggest community on Koh Kood is Aow Yai Village, a harbor where many fishing boats seek shelter from storms or take a break from their weary travels. The oldest community is Klong Mad Village. The residents of Koh Kood still make a living out of planting rubber trees, cultivation of coconuts and basic fisheries. However, the slowly expanding tourism industry gives more and more work to the people of Koh Kood. Hotels and resorts have been increasing but the island remains largely unspoiled. Bays scatter the circumference of the island with accommodation on Aow Prao, Aow Taphao, Aow Yai Kerd, Aow Klong Chao, Aow Klong Ta Din, Aow Klong Yai Kee, Aow Klong Hin, Aow Ngam Kho, and of course Aow Bang Bao.

Koh Kood is mostly covered with thick ancient jungle, coconut trees and rubber tree plantations. There are several small mountains which make for some very rewarding trekking. The mountains here are not so high, and the views are well worth the effort. There are also several streams and waterfalls. Klong Chao Waterfall is particularly spectacular and a popular place to swim and cool off. With three tiers, it brims with glittering water all year round. Klong Chao Waterfall was once visited by King Mongkut (King Rama VI) and was given the royal name ‘Anamkok Waterfall’ in commemoration of Ong Chiang Lue, a Vietnamese King taking refuge in the Kingdom of Thailand during the reign of King Rama I in the late 18th century. Klong Yaiki is another refreshing waterfall found more to the north of the island and is well worth a visit. Inland there are several ancient trees which are well exploring. Our jungle expert Bui will happily guide you to enjoy the massive 500 year old Makka Tree or the huge Chaiyak which both stand deep in the ancient jungle. We also have monkeys and wild boar, which are a highlight to see if you can spot them. Koh Kood is definitely an island for those with a passion for nature.

Island Entertainment
It’s not all about the diving in Koh Kood! The Island has a lot to offer and visitors who come here usually find it difficult to leave. Many people re-visit year after year, drawn by the relaxed and laid back pace of life and natural beauty of the island.
There are a number of stunning beaches and beautiful bays with crystal-clear waters - perfect for lazing the day away and relaxing during your stay here. Some of the more popular beaches are Taphao Beach, Klong Chao Beach, Klong Hin Beach and Phrao Beach. Besides relaxing on these tropical stretches of white sand, snorkeling at the beautiful coral reefs is also popular and magical way to spend your time. The Koh Kood waters are home to a stunning variety of marine life which can be explored free-diving and snorkeling the shallows. If you want to be a bit more adventurous, kayaks and canoes are available for rent from a number of resorts. The Klongs (rivers) are a gentle alternative, but sea kayaking is also a lot of fun! Klong Chao waterfall can be reached by Kayak and it’s a peaceful paddle, during which you can also enjoy the beautiful bird life of the Klong. Some of the more expensive Resorts on Koh Kood offer Banana/Donut-boat-trips and water-skiing. Visitors can do drop line fishing at the beaches and bays or rent a boat over night (about 3000 Baht) in order to try night time fishing. The village Aow Salad (Baan Aow Salad) in the Salad Bay (Aow Salad) is located in the northeast part of the island. It is the biggest fishing village on Ko Kood and fresh seafood can be bought every day. It’s a fun day trip and an interesting glimpse into the local way of life.
The night sky on Koh Kood is another natural wonder as light pollution here is minimal and star gazing is a magical way to pass the evening.
Koh Mai Si is a small island situated to the northwest of Koh Kood. There is a local pearl fishery on this island and visitors are welcome to come and look at the pearl production and buy pearl products.
Situated close to the National Marine Park, visitors can also visit any of the 52 nearby islands for snorkeling and other activities. Koh Wai is a small paradise situated approximately 6 kilometers south of the southernmost end of Koh Chang. The island is about 3 kilometers long, in the widest point 1.5 kilometers and has some very beautiful sandy beaches. Koh Wai is reached daily by a boat starting at 3.00 pm from the Laem-Ngop-Pier. The travel time is 2.5 hours and costs 130 Baht. Interconnecting ferries also run to Koh Chang, Koh Maak, and Koh Kradat, which has many deer and will soon be open to visitors for safari.
For those planning on traveling to Cambodia, Koh Kood is an ideal stepping stone to the Cambodian border. This is also useful for anyone who needs to renew/extend their Thai Visa. There is now a weekly speedboat departing from Koh Kood to Haad Lek, the Cambodian border. This leaves every Friday from Doy’s Guesthouse in Klong Chao and the trip takes about an hour.
Island Facilities
As previously mentioned, Koh Kood certainly has some catching up to do in terms of modern conveniences. But that kind of adds to the charm of the island. You won’t find any of the usual 7Eleven stores, Starbucks, McDonalds or Burger Kings, but we like it that way.
The Island has an essential infrastructure which includes a hospital, a couple of schools, a police station, electricity (mainly for state-run facilities), water and telephone system. Fuel and solar energy are the main source of power on the island.
However, there are no banks or ATM’s on the island. Some of the resorts and hotels have money changing facilities but these usually charge a fairly hefty exchange rate. Visitors are strongly advised to bring cash.
Koh Kood Climate
The climate of Koh Kood is tropical and the weather is typically warm and pleasant during the tourist season, which is generally from October to May. Average temperatures on Koh Kood are around 28° C (87° Fahrenheit) between October and February, and 30° C (84° Fahrenheit) between March and May. The tide is high in the morning in the cool season (in November) and at night in the summer time (in March).
The best time of year to visit Koh Kood is therefore in late October until the end of February because of its relatively cool, dry and sunny weather. Of course tourists are welcome year round and we have our hot season up until the end of May. June is when the monsoon season usually begins and we typically experience our heaviest rainy period between June and September. Visits are certainly still possible during this period however some of the ferry and speed boat services may be limited due to high waves.
